Exhibition
The archaeological area of the Roman Forum and Palatine presents the Penelope exhibition. The setting includes 50 works (like paintings, sculptures, vases, reliefs) that trace the different aspects of the figure of Penelope, described through literature and art.
Penelope, an important figure in Greek mythology, is best known for her loyalty to her husband Ulysses, king of Ithaca. The story is narrated in particular in the Odyssey, the famous epic poem attributed to Homer, where Penelope is the emblem of the wise and devoted wife. During the twenty years that Odysseus has been absent, Penelope proves patient and witty. Despite the pressure of numerous suitors, who would like to marry her believing Ulysses is dead, Penelope finds ingenious ways to postpone the decision, such as the famous weaving stratagem, that weaves by day and unravels by night.
The figure of Penelope, emblem of loyalty, intelligence, patience and wisdom, has left a significant mark not only on Western literature, but also on art and culture. Often depicted weaving or unweaving her work, her image has been a source of inspiration in numerous artistic works, from Renaissance painting to contemporary sculpture.
The exhibition itinerary pays homage to Maria Lai, known for having contributed to the diffusion of textile art. The exhibition presents a tribute to his works that dialogue with the myth of Penelope, creating a sort of link between past and present.
