Guercino. The Ludovisi era in Rome.

Until 26 January 2025 the exhibition Guercino. The Ludovisi era in Rome will be hosted at the Scuderie del Quirinale

Exhibition

Scuderie del Quirinale host the exhibition Guercino. The Ludovisi era in Rome until the 26th of January 2025. I includes 121 works from 68 important institutions, thus tracing the history of the two main protagonists: Guercino and the Ludovisi dynasty.

The itinerary unfolds like a story dedicated to the Ludovisi papacy (1621-1623), a brilliant and crucial phase for Roman artistic evolution, dated between the great Borghese and Barberini dynasties. It was in these years that Guercino found in Rome an unrepeatable opportunity to make himself known, fueling his creativity thanks to the sophisticated patronage of Pope Gregory XV. The works on display reveal the distinctive features of a period that laid the foundations for the Baroque that followed.

Guercino’s masterpieces dialogue with works by artists like Guido Reni, Pietro da Cortona, Van Dyck and Bernini, recalling episodes of rivalry, influences and artistic exchanges. From here it emerges how Guercino’s artistic vision, characterized by a high chromatic sensitivity, became fundamental for the rise of the Ludovisi family and for the consolidation of their cultural and political influence.

During the exhibition, it will exceptionally be possible to visit some rooms of the Casino of Villa Ludovisi, including the one that houses the Aurora by Guercino.
