Day for Night: New American Realism

The National Galleries of Ancient Art in Palazzo Barberini host the exhibition Day for Night: New American Realism until September 8, 2024.

Exhibition

Until September 8, Palazzo Barberini hosts the exhibition Day for Night: New American Realism, dedicated to the representation of reality in contemporary American art.

It takes its name from the work by New York artist Lorna Simpson Day For Night, which recalls the cinematic technique to recreate night scenes during the day, called Nuit Américaine (the American night). This is also the title of the 1973 film by François Truffaut. The image fits perfectly with the chiaroscuro visions of these artists, capable of understanding the complex reality of America in recent decades.

Curated by Massimiliano Gioni and Flaminia Gennari Santori, the exhibition is made up of 12 rooms for temporary exhibitions, some spaces on the main floor and the Appartamento del Settecento, which the public will be able to access uninterruptedly for the first time. The path features over 150 works by leading artists, including Cecily Brown, Nicole Eisenman, Julie Mehretu, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman and Christopher Wool.

The exhibition also shows works by emerging artists located within the National Galleries of Ancient Art, which host the largest collection of Caravaggio’s paintings in the world. These are works by artists who have the purpose to represent reality in a naturalistic way.

The dialogue between the masterpieces of the Tony and Elham Salamé collection of the Aïshti Foundation in Beirut and the works of Palazzo Barberini create a fascinating encounter between the representation of the reality of the past and that of the present.
