The largest exhibition held in Rome on Fernando Botero will be hosted at Palazzo Bonaparte from September 17, 2024 to January 19, 2025.

Exhibition

The works by Fernando Botero are the protagonists of the largest retrospective of the Colombian artist ever held in Rome. The exhibition will be housed at Palazzo Bonaparte from September 17, 2024 until January 19, 2025.

Sculptor, painter and illustrator, Botero is famous throughout the world for his original and unique style. The so-called Boterismo is characterized by bright colors and figures with opulent shapes. Masterpieces on display include watercolors, paintings and sculptures, celebrating the art of one of the most important post-war masters: the roundness of female bodies, created through three-dimensional effects and bright colors, the reinterpretations of masterpieces such as Raphael’s Fornarina and bourgeois portraits of Rubens and van Eyck, as well as circus and corrida themed paintings.

The exhibition also includes a series of more recent works displayed in a single room. These are watercolors on canvas created in 2019, the result of a lighter approach to the themes that have always been important for Botero.

Fernando Botero

Born in Colombia, in Medellín, he began to train as an artist thanks to numerous trips to Italy which brought him into contact with the works of the Florentine school (from 1200 to the Renaissance). Thus, he began to devise his typical pictorial technique, composed of exaggerated and unusual shapes, with bright colors. This unique figurative style is called Boterismo. His works have been exhibited in some of the most famous places in the world, including the pyramids of Egypt, the Champs Elysées in Paris and Piazza della Signoria in Florence.
