The exhibition

Tony Cragg‘s works will be on display at the Baths of Diocletian until May 4, 2025. He is one of the most significant figures in contemporary sculpture, renowned for his exploration of unexpected forms and the use of innovative materials. Since the 1970s, his artistic journey has been driven by relentless experimentation, creating works that engage in a continuous dialogue with the natural world and its transformative processes.
While deeply rooted in the language of contemporary art, his creations seamlessly integrate with the spaces that host them. This is particularly true for the spectacular Halls of the Baths of Diocletian, which currently house 18 sculptures in bronze, wood, travertine, fiberglass, and steel, crafted by the British artist over the past two decades. With their fluid and evocative forms, these works reference elements of nature, recalling geological, botanical, and marine structures—from ocean waves to the intricate shapes of seashells—in a fascinating interaction with the ancient archaeological complex.
The title of the exhibition, inspired by an expression from Charles Darwin, reflects the artist’s sense of wonder at the extraordinary diversity of life forms. Through his sculptures, Cragg offers the audience a vision balanced between abstraction and reality, playing with contrasts between solid and void, stability and fragility, equilibrium and motion. His works invite viewers into an immersive experience that stimulates both sensory perception and intellectual reflection.
