The Art of the Popes. From Perugino to Barocci

In the heart of Rome, within the evocative setting of Castel Sant’Angelo, the extraordinary exhibition The Art of the Popes: From Perugino to Barocci comes to life. Among the 38 masterpieces on display, visitors will find works by renowned painters such as Perugino, Andrea del Sarto, and Annibale Carracci.

The exhibition

Until August 31, Castel Sant’Angelo hosts The Art of the Popes: From Perugino to Barocci , an exceptional collection featuring works by Perugino, Andrea del Sarto, Annibale Carracci, Federico Barocci and other great masters.
Ten of the 38 exhibited pieces, spanning from the 16th to the 18th century, come from the prestigious collection of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca.
This exhibition offers a unique perspective on how the popes have played a crucial role in enriching Rome’s artistic heritage. More than just a display of remarkable artworks, it represents a journey through Rome’s identity as a cradle of beauty, memory, and universal values.
The exhibition takes visitors through key evangelical themes such as childhood, motherhood, joy and suffering, resurrection, mercy, and hope.
Among the highlights are Andrea del Sarto’s Madonna with Child, Saint Joseph, and Saint Peter Martyr and Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo’s Adoration of the Child with Saint Jerome and Saint Francis.
A further point of interest is the collection of papal portraits, bearing witness to the historical and artistic patronage of the Church. The exhibition also includes a contemporary art section, featuring works by Bruno Ceccobelli, Giuseppe Salvatori, Luigi Stoisa, and Giorgio Di Giorgio, offering a modern reinterpretation of sacred themes.
