The exhibition
Discover the beauty and complexity of post-war Italy through the extraordinary shots at Gagosian Gallery, by Richard Avedoon, one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Renowned for his ability to tell powerful stories through faces and emotions, Avedon captured the Italian peninsula between 1946 and 1948—a pivotal moment of transition between the devastation of World War II and the country’s hopeful rebirth. His images, shot across Rome, Venice, and Sicily, reflect the striking contrast between natural beauty and historical destruction, between a glorious past and an uncertain present. The Italy series (1946–48), composed of over 18 photographs, is being shown in its entirety for the first time at Gagosian Gallery. Among the highlights are powerful street scenes and portraits that reveal the resilience and humanity of the people Avedon encountered during his travels.
These Italian photographs laid the foundation for his refined approach to portraiture, anticipating the depth and atmosphere later seen in his iconic images of Marilyn Monroe and Ruby Holden.
Curated by Cécile Degos—who also curated Iconic Avedon in Paris—the exhibition features both early Italian works and some of Avedon’s most celebrated portraits, offering a profound look at Italy’s social and cultural transformation.
Don’t miss the opportunity to dive into Avedon’s world and discover Italy through the eyes of one of the greatest photography masters of the 20th century.
