Global Baroque: The World in Rome in the Age of Bernini

Until July 13, the Scuderie del Quirinale host the exhibition "Global Baroque: The World in Rome in the Age of Bernini in the Age of Bernini".

The exhibition

Discover Global Baroque: The World in Rome in the Age of Bernini, an extraordinary international exhibition that explores the cultural connections in 17th-century Rome. Hosted at the Scuderie del Quirinale, this exhibition celebrates the city’s cosmopolitan encounter with cultural realities from all over the world, highlighting its role as a crossroads of artistic influences.
The exhibition offers a unique and in-depth experience through a rigorous historical and scientific approach. Over a hundred masterpieces by Baroque masters such as Bernini, Van Dyck, Poussin, Pietro da Cortona, Lavinia Fontana, and Nicolas Cordier are displayed to the public, alongside drawings, engravings, tapestries, and artifacts that tell the story of how Rome influenced the arts during this period.
The exhibition title evokes the incredible intertwining of transcultural relationships between Rome and other global artistic realities, starting with the inaugural section that presents the polychrome marble bust of Antonio Manuel Ne Vunda, a masterpiece by Francesco Caporale, exceptionally loaned by Pope Francis. This marks the beginning of a journey through the 17th century, exploring the African continent with works such as “Merry Company with Fortune Teller” by Valentin de Boulogne and “Young African” by Nicolas Cordier.
The exhibition also delves into the impact of Islamic cultures on Baroque Rome, featuring the unpublished portrait of Ali-qoli Beg, a Persian ambassador, and a series of works that explore otherness between imagination and reality, such as Maria Mancini Colonna’s portrait by Jacob Ferdinand Voet. Other extraordinary pieces include the portraits of Robert Shirley and his wife by Anthony Van Dyck, as well as the magnificent painting “Hannibal Crossing the Alps” by Nicolas Poussin.
Additionally, the fresco cycle in the Salone dei Corazzieri of the Presidency of the Republic, with works by Agostino Tassi and Giovanni Lanfranco, offers a unique view of the relationships between Rome and the cultures of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, revealing the cosmopolitan dimension of the city in the 17th century.
Global Baroque: The World in Rome in the Age of Bernini is one of the must-see exhibitions of the season in Rome. It gathers the artistic testimonies of an era when the capital was a global reference point for art and culture. This is a unique opportunity to explore the intercultural dialogue that defined the city as the beating heart of global creativity.
