The Museo Nazionale Romano at Palazzo Altemps presents a major exhibition dedicated to Gabriele Basilico, one of the masters of urban photography, in celebration of the 80th anniversary of his birth. It is a comprehensive overview of Basilico’s photographic explorations of Rome, establishing a visual dialogue with the museum’s spaces and artworks. Basilico, who passed away in 2013, had a profound connection with the Eternal City, which he frequently visited throughout his career. Between 1985 and 2011, he received twenty professional commissions to document Rome through various photographic campaigns. The exhibition is structured into two main sections, linked by a central space that serves as the heart of the display. The showcased images present a vision of Rome that blends monumentality with modernity, capturing the city from striking and unexpected perspectives. On display are 56 works, both in black and white and in color, alongside more than 250 original contact prints from the artist’s archive. These include images of rationalist architecture, the coexistence of civil and monumental buildings from ancient Rome, and a series of perspectives on the Colosseum. Additionally, 60 original sheets of contact proofs with photographer’s notes reveal the creative process behind Basilico’s seven major projects on Rome. The exhibition concludes with a selection of his most recent and monumental works, culminating in his only color series dedicated to the Tiber River.
