The exhibition
Frida Kahlo is the protagonist of the photo exhibition hosted at Museo Storico della Fanteria in Rome until July 20, 2025. This showcase reveals the most authentic and personal side of the iconic Mexican painter through the renowned photographs of Nickolas Muray.
Curated by Vittoria Mainoldi, the exhibition invites visitors on an intimate journey into the artist’s life, featuring approximately 60 shots—both in color and black and white—displayed in Rome for the first time. Captured between 1937 and 1946, these photographs portray Frida Kahlo in various moments: alone, alongside Diego Rivera, with friends, and in the company of Muray.
Muray’s lens, distinguished by his mastery of portraiture and pioneering use of color photography, offers a unique perspective shaped by his close emotional connection with the artist. Through his images, the deep bond between Frida and Mexican culture emerges, alongside people and experiences that defined her life.
The exhibition is further enriched by a collection of original letters exchanged between Frida and Muray throughout their relationship—a connection that fluctuated between passion and friendship until Kahlo’s passing in 1954. Additionally, the exhibition includes rare video footage of them, dresses inspired by Frida’s distinctive style and crafted by indigenous Mexican artisans, as well as handcrafted jewelry and accessories reflecting her unique taste. An important collection of stamps from around the world completes the experience.
