The exhibition
Until July 6, the Galleria Nazionale di Arte Antica in Palazzo Barberini presents the monographic exhibition Caravaggio 2025. This project, one of the most significant dedicated to Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (1571-1610), offers an exhibition journey that brings together numerous autograph paintings along with rarely seen works and new discoveries, all set in one of the symbolic spaces of the bond between the artist and his patrons. The exhibition unites famous masterpieces with lesser-known yet equally significant works, offering a profound reflection on the artistic and cultural revolution introduced by the Master. In this context, all the innovative elements that redefined the artistic, religious, and social landscape of his time are explored. The installation is divided into thematic sections, each dedicated to an aspect of Caravaggio’s production. The masterpieces on display highlight the originality of Caravaggio’s pictorial language, characterized by a dramatic use of light that transforms representations of sacred and profane subjects, opening new interpretative perspectives. This innovation is evident not only in the dramatic religious scenes – such as in the Takingof Christ, on loan from the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin – but also in portraits, for example in the Portrait of Maffeo Barberini, privately owned and for the first time exhibited alongside other works by the Master, recognized as the first modern portrait. Other notable works include: Saint Catherine of Alexandria from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, which returns to the Barberini collections, and Martha and Mary Magdalene from the Detroit Institute of Arts, created using the same model as “Judith” housed in Palazzo Barberini, exhibited together for the first time.
