Aesthetics of deformation. Protagonists of Italian Expressionism

Until the 2nd of February 2025, the Galleria d’arte moderna in Rome hosts the exhibition Aesthetics of Deformation. Protagonists of Italian Expressionism.

The Exhibition

Until the 2nd of February 2025, the exhibition Aesthetics of deformation. Protagonists of Italian Expressionism. will be set up in the rooms of the Galleria d’arte Moderna in Rome. It will be possible to admire 130 masterpieces from the Iannaccone collection in Milan by the expressionist artistic period in Italy between the 1930s and 1950s. There will also be works from the collections of the Museo di Villa Torlonia and Casa Museo Alberto Moravia.

The itinerary includes some of the leading artists of the time, capable of introducing a new non-conformist language into Italy. At the center was the representation of the subject’s interiority, the use of non-naturalistic colors and the idea of ​​form opposed to the classic canon of beauty. In paintings the city becomes the setting for dreamlike visions. Instead, the subjects in contact with deformed reality are the mirror of an anguished representation of existence.

Among the main artists there are: Arnaldo Badodi, Filippo De Pisis, Renato Guttuso, Carlo Levi, Mario Mafai, Giacomo Manzù, Marino Mazzacurati, Fausto Pirandello, Antonietta Raphaël, Ernesto Treccani and Italo Valenti.

The exhibition underlines the ability of the Italian expressionists to have created a completely new and original language in the wake of international trends capable of interpreting the concerns of their time.
