Until February 28, 2025, the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art hosts the exhibition “The Time of Futurism”, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s death.
The exhibition
The exhibition The Time of Futurism is hosted at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art until February 28. It celebrates the 80th anniversary of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s death, which occurred on December 2, 1944.
Unlike previous exhibitions dedicated to the avant-garde movement founded by Marinetti in 1909, this one focuses on the relationship among art, science and technology. It highlights the profound transformation in human perception brought about by major scientific discoveries, which served as the foundation of Futurism. This reflection is strikingly relevant today, considering the impact of artificial intelligence on society, realizing the Futurist prediction of a symbiosis between man and machine.
The exhibition is designed to be inclusive, educational and multidisciplinary, catering to a broad audience with particular attention to younger generations. Through Futurist masterpieces, it explores themes such as speed, space, distance and the evolution of perception, contextualizing them within the historical era transformed by technological innovations.
The display features around 350 works, including paintings, sculptures, projects, drawings, furniture, films and over a hundred books and posters. It also provides an unprecedented focus on the literary component of the movement, enriched by the display of a seaplane, cars, motorcycles and scientific instruments from the period. The setup includes two site-specific installations by Magister Art and Lorenzo Marini and will be enlivened by talks and performances curated by Federico Palmaroli.
