The exhibition
The Museum of Rome a Palazzo Braschi presents the exhibition Roma Pittrice. Female artists between the 16th and 19th centuries. This event explores the path of the numerous female artists active in the capital from the 16th to the 19th century, authors of works of great value and variety, often unfairly placed in the background in the history of art.
With around 130 works on display, the exhibition highlights artists present in the Capitoline collections, such as Caterina Ginnasi, Maria Felice Tibaldi Subleyras, Angelika Kaufmann, Laura Piranesi, Marianna Candidi Dionigi, Louise Seidler, and Emma Gaggiotti Richards. Also included are other prominent female artists who worked in Rome, like Lavinia Fontana, Artemisia Gentileschi, Maddalena Corvina, Giovanna Garzoni, as well as many others whose artistic production is emerging thanks to recent research. The exhibition also explores the various languages, styles and techniques used, illustrated through significant themes and figures.
The exhibition itinerary highlights the inclusion of female painters in the international artistic market and the progressive access to the most relevant institutions in the city, such as the Accademia di San Luca and the Accademia dei Virtuosi al Pantheon.
Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi
Located between Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori, Palazzo Braschi houses the Museum of Rome. It has undergone important renovation and restoration interventions, which have brought to light the magnificence of its architecture. Some examples are the suggestive internal courtyard, the elegant stuccoes and the pictorial decorations in the rooms.
The museum preserves over one hundred thousand works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, engravings, photographs, furniture, clothes, ceramics, carriages, sedan chairs, architectural elements and frescoes saved from demolition.
