Until January 12th, 2025, two works by the painter Sebastiano Ricci will be exhibited for the first time at the Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi.
The exhibition
The Museo di Roma at Palazzo Braschi is hosting two masterpieces by the Venetian painter Sebastiano Ricci, exhibited to the public for the first time.Both paintings likely date back to the early 18th century, during Ricci’s stay in Florence, and depict two mythological scenes.
The first is The Triumph of Venus, where the goddess of beauty emerges from the sea, surrounded by cherubs and nymphs, with colors and movements that capture the viewers’ attention. The other one, Bacchus and Ariadne, portrays the god of wine and the Cretan princess Ariadne in a bucolic setting. Recently restored, these two works highlight Sebastiano Ricci’s immense talent, demonstrating his ability to blend classical and baroque elements with great balance.
The Venetian artist was a pioneer of a clear and luminous style of painting, characterized by theatrical compositions, a trait that closely links him to Paolo Veronese and the Baroque masters.
Sebastiano Ricci
Born in Belluno in 1659, Sebastiano Ricci is one of the greatest masters of baroque painting of the late 17th century. He worked in some of the most important courts in Europe, including Vienna, Paris and London. In Rome he created the fresco with the Allegory of the Battle of Lepanto in Palazzo Colonna, the Ascension in the Basilica dei Santi Apostoli and two big biblical canvases in Palazzo Taverna. His works stand out for the skilful use of light and colors, as well as lively movement.
