Picasso the stranger

Palazzo Cipolla in Rome celebrates the genius of Picasso with an extraordinary exhibition. An unmissable opportunity to discover his extraordinary contribution to the history of art.

The exhibition

Until June 29, Palazzo Cipolla will host the exhibition Picasso the Foreigner, paying tribute to one of the greatest artists of the 20th century by exploring his creative journey and the connection between art and identity. The exhibition highlights how, as a foreigner in France, Picasso redefined himself and revolutionized the artistic landscape. Organized by Fondazione Roma in collaboration with Marsilio Arte and curated by Annie Cohen-Solal, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on Picasso’s ability to overcome the challenges of immigration, turning obstacles into inspiration. The charismatic Spanish artist arrived in Paris in 1904 and soon became a leading figure of the Cubist avant-garde, remaining in France until his passing—despite never obtaining citizenship. It was in France, in 1937, that he created Guernica, one of the most powerful masterpieces of the 20th century. The exhibition, conceived by the curator with the contribution of Johan Popelard from the Musée national Picasso-Paris, takes visitors on a journey through over 100 works, accompanied by documents, photographs, letters, and videos. Among the highlights we find a section dedicated to the Roman spring of 1917, when Picasso shared his time with Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Serge de Diaghilev, and Leonid Massine. The exhibited works come from some of the most prestigious cultural institutions, including the Musée national Picasso-Paris, the Palais de la Porte Dorée, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, the Musée Picasso in Antibes, and the Musée Magnelli – Musée de la Céramique in Vallauris, as well as distinguished private European collections.
